Management Bios.

 

William A. Valerian, Chairman, President and CEO, joined the Bank as a Director in 2001, was elected  Chairman of the Board in June of 2003 and was appointed CEO in January of 2004. A veteran of the banking industry since 1969, Mr. Valerian was formerly Director of Mortgage Consulting for Smythe Cramer Realty's HMAC, was the Director of the Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship at John Carroll University, the President of Charter One Investor Services, a subsidiary of Charter One Financial, Inc. He held positions of CEO, COO and Chief Loan Officer (CLO) at Home Bank and CEO and COO of Haverfield Corporation, holding company of Home Bank. Prior to Home Bank, Mr. Valerian served in various capacities for Third Federal Savings and Loan.

 

Mr. Valerian was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® Award in Northeast Ohio. The award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities

 

A well-respected, dedicated volunteer serving in a trustee capacity, Mr. Valerian currently holds or has held leadership positions with: Cleveland Institute of Art; Julie Billiart School; Alta House Neighborhood Center; First Suburbs Consortium Development Council; Chairman of the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland; member of the Steering Committee of Civic Vision 2000; Trustee of Notre Dame College; National Chairman of the Institute of Financial Education; Trustee of the former Child Guidance Center (now Applewood Centers) and Board Member of St. Ignatius High School.

 

He is a graduate of Marquette University and Leadership Cleveland.

 

   

Richard C. Ebner, CPA, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, joined the Bank in 2004. Mr. Ebner is directly responsible for the financial and operational aspects of the bank and brings more than thirty years of banking experience to the job, primarily in the Cleveland area. Mr. Ebner was previously CFO of DeepGreen Bank, an internet-only bank, prior to that he acted as COO, CFO and Treasurer of both Haverfield Corporation and Home Bank. He also served in supervisory officer capacities at Charter One Bank and Society National Bank (now Key Bank).

 

Mr. Ebner was awarded the Crain’s Cleveland Business CFO of the Year Award for small, privately held businesses. The CFO of the Year Award honors excellence in leadership and salutes top financial professionals for their dedication and strategic leadership in guiding the future of Northeast Ohio businesses. 

 

Mr. Ebner is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.

 

He is a graduate of John Carroll University.

   

 

   

Christine M. Black, SVP/Deposit Services Manager, joined the Bank in 2005. With more than 25 years in the banking industry, Ms. Black previously served as Assistant Manager of Deposit Services with Charter One Bank in Cleveland.

 

She also served as Supervisor of EFT Claims/Settlement with Charter One. Previously, Ms. Black was Assistant Vice President of Deposit Operations for Home Bank, N.A. in Cleveland.

 

Ms. Black earned a Bachelor degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

 

   

Adam T. Cook, SVP/Chief Administration Officer, joined the Bank in 2006. A seasoned banking professional, Mr. Cook is responsible for collections, servicing, loan documentation and monitoring of the Bank's loan portfolio.  Prior to joining Liberty, he served as a Client Consultant and Account Executive for FISERV VISION.

 

He also served as Compliance Officer, Deposit Operations Administrator, and Chief Information Officer with Century Bank in Parma, Ohio. He brings more than 15 years of banking and technology expertise to Liberty.

 

Mr. Cook earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio.

 

   

Stephen Owendoff, In House General Counsel joined the bank as an employee in 2011 after years in private practice with Hahn Loeser where he also served as the Bank's outside counsel. Mr. Owendoff has experience in general corporate practice, including public and private securities offerings for issuers and underwriters, acquisitions and sales of business, including branch acquisitions and dispositions for financial institutions.

 

His current community involvement includes serving on the board of trustees and executive committee of the Cleveland Leadership Center, serving on the board of trustees for Vocational Guidance Services and The Intergenerational School, and serving on the advisory board to the Entrepreneur's Association of John Carroll University.

Mr. Owendoff is listed in the 1999-2011 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the categories of Corporate Law and Real Estate Law, and in the 2004-08 editions of Ohio Super Lawyers. He is AV Rated by Martindale-Hubbell, its highest available rating for legal ability and professional ethics.

Mr. Owendoff received his B.A. degree from Bowdoin College and Kent State University and his J.D. from Georgetown University.

 

 

 

 

Craig Reay, SVP/Chief Credit Officer joined the bank in 2011.  Mr. Reay is a credit professional with over 30 years of active involvement as a bank officer and national bank examiner. He has extensive experience in all facets of credit administration: loan decision making; underwriting/ structuring; financial analysis; loan review/ problem credit identification; troubled loan collection/workout; allowance for loan and lease losses analysis and documentation, and regulatory relations/compliance.

 

Mr. Reay is a graduate of the National Commercial Lending Graduate School sponsored by the American Bankers Association.  He received his Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.

 

 

 

   

Christopher Smerglia, SVP/Commercial Lending Team Leader, joined the bank in 2011. His primary responsibility is directing commercial lending sales activities and supervising business development functions of the commercial loan officers.

 

Mr. Smerglia’s 30 plus years of  banking experience include Retail Banking, Credit Underwriting, Commercial Lending, Portfolio Management, and Business Development.

 

Mr. Smerglia graduated from John Carroll University with a BS/BA degree in Management.
